MediaTek Dimensity 6400: Budget 5G Chip with Minimal Differences from Dimensity 6300

The MediaTek Dimensity 6400 is a budget 5G platform for entry-level and lower mid-range smartphones. It is a minor update to the Dimensity 6300: nearly the same CPU configuration, the same Mali-G57 MC2 graphics, and support for LPDDR4x and UFS 2.2. The main change is the clock speed of the higher Cortex-A76 cores, which has increased from 2.4 to 2.5 GHz.

This processor should not be considered a new generation. A smartphone with Dimensity 6400 makes sense only when priced well and with balanced specifications: adequate memory, a decent screen, a sizable battery, and an acceptable camera.

Positioning and Difference from Dimensity 6300

The Dimensity 6400 belongs to the affordable Dimensity 6000 series. It is a processor for low-cost 5G smartphones where the manufacturer needs to add modern connectivity without resorting to the more expensive Dimensity 7000 series.

The CPU features two performance cores, Cortex-A76, and six energy-efficient Cortex-A55. This configuration has long been used in the budget and lower mid-range segments. It is suitable for the interface, browser, messengers, video, and navigation, but it lags behind newer architectures.

The difference with the Dimensity 6300 primarily comes down to the clock speed of the higher cores: 2.5 GHz instead of 2.4 GHz. This does not change the class of the device. In practice, the difference is more strongly determined by the amount of RAM, firmware, cooling, and storage speed.

CPU and Graphics Performance

The CPU component of the Dimensity 6400 is adequate for everyday tasks: interface, browser, messengers, video, maps, and banking applications. With 6-8 GB of RAM, a smartphone with this chip will handle basic scenarios well.

The performance headroom is limited. The Cortex-A76 cores are outdated by modern standards, and the Cortex-A55 primarily focus on efficiency. With demanding websites, active multitasking, background updates, and a crowded interface, the chip will reach its performance limit faster than models with Cortex-A78, Cortex-A710, or Cortex-A715.

The main limitation of the Dimensity 6400 remains the graphics. The Mali-G57 MC2 is a basic GPU for low-cost smartphones. Simple games, casual projects, and undemanding online games will run adequately, but in heavier projects, settings will need to be reduced. A 120 Hz screen does not mean games will run at 120 fps.

Gaming performance depends on the specific smartphone: cooling, RAM capacity, firmware, and power consumption settings. However, the Dimensity 6400 should not be considered a gaming chip. It is a platform for regular use, capable of running games at moderate settings.

Connectivity, Memory, Display, and Cameras

A strong point of the Dimensity 6400 is access to 5G in affordable smartphones. The chip supports 5G Sub-6, Dual 5G SIM, and claims download speeds of up to 3.3 Gbps. For the budget segment, this is more important than a slight CPU frequency increase.

The wireless interface set is basic: Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.2. This is not on par with new flagship platforms featuring Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7, but it is sufficient for the budget segment.

Memory consists of LPDDR4x, and the storage uses UFS 2.2. This is a typical configuration for a budget 5G device. Versions with 4 GB of RAM are a weak option for a purchase in 2026: the limitations will quickly become not only the processor but also the RAM capacity. The minimum for comfortable operation is 6 GB, and 8 GB is better.

The Dimensity 6400 supports Full HD+ displays up to 120 Hz. For an affordable smartphone, this is enough, but the smoothness of the interface depends on the firmware, refresh rate in specific modes, and the quality of the panel itself.

Support for cameras up to 108 MP does not guarantee high-quality photos. The final result depends on the sensor, optics, stabilization, processing algorithms, and manufacturer settings.

Comparison with Similar Chips

Chip Main Difference When to Choose
Dimensity 6400 5G and slightly higher CPU frequency than Dimensity 6300 If the price is nearly the same as models with Dimensity 6300
Dimensity 6300 Almost the same platform If the smartphone is significantly cheaper
Dimensity 6100+ Older budget 5G option If the price is lower and other specifications are not worse
Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 Close competitor in budget 5G segment If the specific smartphone excels in screen, battery, memory, or camera
Helio G99 / Helio G100 4G without 5G If 5G is not needed and the price is lower

The Dimensity 6400 does not provide a significant advantage over the Dimensity 6300. Its advantage over the Helio G99 and Helio G100 is primarily related to 5G support. If 5G is not needed, the processor itself does not appear to be a compelling reason for purchase.

Comparisons with the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 also need to be made on a case-by-case basis. In this class, the device's balance is more important than the SoC name: memory, screen, battery, charging, camera, and update duration.

Real Use Scenarios

The Dimensity 6400 is designed for everyday tasks: interface, messengers, browser, video, maps, calls, and simple applications. For such demands, it is adequate in an economical smartphone.

In the browser, social media, and applications, much depends on the amount of memory. The version with 4 GB of RAM will begin to unload applications from memory faster and lose smoothness during task switching. Configurations with 6-8 GB of RAM are noticeably preferable.

In games, the limitations are more apparent. Simple projects, arcade games, card games, MOBA, and undemanding online games will run fine. In heavy projects like Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, Wuthering Waves, and others, graphics settings will need to be lowered, and frame rate drops will be expected.

In 1-2 years, comfort of use will depend on memory capacity and firmware. A model with 8 GB of RAM, UFS 2.2, and not too heavy firmware will maintain acceptable speed longer than the base version with 4 GB.

Should You Buy a Smartphone with Dimensity 6400

A smartphone with Dimensity 6400 is worth considering if you need an inexpensive device with 5G, decent autonomy, and performance for browsing, video, messengers, navigation, and simple games.

It is not worth overpaying just for the Dimensity 6400. If there is a similar model with the Dimensity 6300 and it is significantly cheaper, the difference in processor does not justify the extra cost. It is more practical to choose a smartphone with more memory, a better screen, a larger battery, or a better camera.

The Dimensity 6400 is not suitable for those seeking a gaming smartphone, headroom for heavy applications and games, or a notable improvement over previous budget MediaTek models. It is a platform for the basic 5G segment without a significant leap forward.

In summary: the MediaTek Dimensity 6400 is a functional budget 5G processor with minimal technical differences from the Dimensity 6300. It should be chosen not for its new index but only if the smartphone itself is well-priced in terms of memory, screen, battery, and camera.
