NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB in 2026: Is it Worth Buying for 1080p Gaming?
The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB was released in 2016, but it is still found in gaming PCs and is actively sold on the secondary market. For older games and less demanding 1080p, its performance is still sufficient; however, the age of Pascal is now evident not only through FPS. The GTX 1060 does not support DLSS or hardware ray tracing, and the release of new Game Ready drivers for it has already been discontinued.
In 2026, the GTX 1060 6 GB is primarily worth considering as a very cheap upgrade for an old PC or as a temporary graphics card, rather than as the foundation for a new gaming system.
GTX 1060 6 GB Still Handles 1080p Games
The GTX 1060 6 GB is built on the GP106 GPU and has 1280 CUDA cores. The card features 6 GB of GDDR5 memory with a 192-bit bus, and the typical power consumption of the reference version is around 120 watts.
For games from the DirectX 11 era and early DirectX 12, this is still adequate. In the CpuTronic database, the GTX 1060 6 GB scores about 4099 points in 3DMark Time Spy. In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, it achieves approximately 51 FPS at 1080p, and in Battlefield V, it runs around 75 FPS.
When moving to 1440p, the performance headroom quickly runs out: in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the result drops to about 33 FPS. For modern heavy titles, you'll need to further reduce graphics settings, and sometimes resort to resolution scaling.
In practice, the GTX 1060 is primarily viable today for 1080p, without expecting maximum settings in new AAA titles.
Different GTX 1060 6 GB: How Important is Factory Overclocking?
Over the years of production, many variations of the GTX 1060 with different cooling systems, frequencies, and power limits have emerged. However, the difference between well-tuned factory models is minimal.
| Graphics Card | 3DMark Time Spy Graphics |
|---|---|
| Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1060 G1 Gaming 6G | 4 288 |
| ASUS ROG Strix GTX 1060 O6G Gaming | 4 263 |
| MSI GeForce GTX 1060 Gaming X 6G | 4 187 |
| Zotac GeForce GTX 1060 AMP! | 4 068 |
| EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 Gaming 6GB | 4 042 |
Under the same conditions, the difference between the fastest and slowest variants is about 6%. Therefore, it is usually not worth overpaying on the secondary market just for a Strix, Gaming X, or another previously top-tier model.
For a decade-old graphics card, the condition of the specific unit is much more important: temperatures, fan operation, memory stability, and usage history.
6 GB of Video Memory is Better than 3 GB, but There’s Not Much Headroom Left
The GTX 1060 6 GB version is significantly superior to the GTX 1060 3 GB. The reason is not just the doubled memory size: the higher variant has 1280 CUDA cores active, whereas the GTX 1060 3 GB has 1152.
For many older and relatively undemanding games, 6 GB is still sufficient. However, in modern AAA titles, this amount can no longer be considered a generous cushion for high texture settings.
Moreover, the GTX 1060's issues do not only arise from the VRAM size. The performance of the GP106 itself, memory bandwidth, and lack of modern NVIDIA technologies often become limiting factors before the additional gigabytes of memory could significantly improve the situation.
The card also does not support DLSS. In some games, you can use AMD FSR or other universal scaling methods, but they do not eliminate the limitations of the old architecture.
In 2025, the GTX 1060 Lost Game Ready Support
In October 2025, NVIDIA ceased the release of Game Ready drivers for the Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta architectures. The GTX 1060 continues to receive critical security updates, which NVIDIA plans to release until October 2028; however, there are no more regular gaming optimizations, new features, or typical Game Ready fixes for Pascal.
This does not mean that new games will stop running immediately. But new releases will no longer receive targeted optimizations for Pascal, which may increasingly affect stability and performance over time.
For an already functioning old PC, this is an acceptable compromise. For a graphics card that is planned to be purchased for several years ahead, it is a significant drawback.
Buying a GTX 1060 on the Secondary Market: What to Check
The GTX 1060 has one advantage over many more powerful older cards - relatively low power consumption. It does not require an expensive power supply and is well-suited for upgrading old systems. Depending on the specific model, it typically uses either one 6-pin or 8-pin power connector.
However, practically any unit of the GTX 1060 in 2026 has already been in use for a considerable time.
Before purchasing, it is advisable to check:
- GPU temperature under sustained load;
- Noise, play, and stability of fan speeds;
- Absence of artifacts;
- Memory stability;
- Performance under sustained gaming load or multiple cycles of a graphics test.
Particular caution should be exercised with cards of unknown usage history: age, in itself, already increases the risk of wear on the fans, thermal interface, and other components.
Should You Buy the GTX 1060 6 GB in 2026?
If the GTX 1060 is already installed in your computer, there is no immediate need to replace it solely because of its age. For older games, esports titles, and less demanding 1080p gaming, it is still capable.
If the card is needed for a very cheap upgrade of an old PC, the GTX 1060 6 GB may also make sense - provided it is in good condition and priced very low.
For a new primary gaming system, it is not worth buying the GTX 1060 anymore. The architecture is nearly ten years old, Game Ready support has ended, DLSS is absent, and performance in new games is increasingly hard to come by even for 1080p.
The main argument for the GTX 1060 6 GB in 2026 is its low price. If a significantly newer graphics card is available for a comparable price, there’s no reason to choose Pascal anymore.
