AMD Radeon Vega 6: Still Handles GTA V, but Struggles with Demanding Games

AMD Radeon Vega 6 in mobile Ryzen 2000 and Ryzen 3000 processors is mainly suitable for older and undemanding games. GTA V, Dota 2, and Rocket League are still playable at 720p or 1366x768, but in demanding titles, the frame rate often falls below 20-25 FPS.

Vega 6 has 6 compute units and 384 stream processors. Its clock speed reaches 1100 MHz in the Ryzen 3 2300U, and 1200 MHz in the Ryzen 3 3300U and Ryzen 3 PRO 3300U. Vega 6 has no dedicated video memory, so FPS and benchmark results depend significantly on the laptop’s system memory.

Which Processors Use Radeon Vega 6

Vega 6 was used in mobile Ryzen 3 processors from the Raven Ridge and Picasso generations.

Processor Generation Vega 6 Clock Speed Memory
Ryzen 3 2300U Raven Ridge up to 1100 MHz DDR4-2400
Ryzen 3 PRO 2300U Raven Ridge up to 1100 MHz DDR4-2400
Ryzen 3 3300U Picasso up to 1200 MHz DDR4-2400
Ryzen 3 PRO 3300U Picasso up to 1200 MHz DDR4-2400
Ryzen 3 3350U Picasso up to 1200 MHz DDR4-2400

The number of compute units remained unchanged in Ryzen 3000, while the maximum Vega 6 clock speed increased from 1100 to 1200 MHz.

Performance in Real Laptops

The same Vega 6 can produce noticeably different scores in different laptops.

Laptop Processor RAM 3DMark Fire Strike Graphics 3DMark Time Spy Graphics
Dell Inspiron 15 3585 Ryzen 3 2300U 8 GB 2064 522
Lenovo ThinkPad X395 Ryzen 3 PRO 3300U 8 GB 2245 -
HP Pavilion 15-cw1212ng Ryzen 3 3300U 16 GB 2312 581

The HP Pavilion with the Ryzen 3 3300U scores 12% higher in Fire Strike Graphics than the Dell Inspiron with the Ryzen 3 2300U. In Time Spy Graphics, the difference between these two systems is about 11%.

However, the entire difference cannot be attributed solely to the APU generation. Vega 6 clock speed, memory configuration, power limits, and laptop cooling also affect the scores. Dual-channel RAM is especially important for integrated graphics.

Which Games Can Radeon Vega 6 Handle

The main gaming resolutions for Vega 6 are 720p and 1366x768. At these resolutions, older and undemanding games often run above 30 FPS.

Game Resolution and Settings FPS
Dota 2 Reborn 1280x720, Low 68.9
Dota 2 Reborn 1366x768, Medium 46.2
Rocket League 1280x720, Performance about 95
GTA V 1024x768, Lowest about 50
GTA V 1366x768, Normal about 39
Battlefield V 1280x720, Low 22.5
Shadow of the Tomb Raider 1280x720, Lowest 18
Counter-Strike 2 1920x1080, Low 25.7

The tests were conducted on different laptops, so the table can be used to estimate what to expect from Vega 6, but these figures cannot be used to compare the games with one another.

Dota 2 delivers about 69 FPS at 720p Low and 46 FPS at 1366x768 Medium. Rocket League reaches about 95 FPS at 720p Performance.

GTA V delivers about 39 FPS at 1366x768 Normal and approximately 50 FPS at 1024x768 Lowest.

In Battlefield V, the frame rate drops to 22.5 FPS even at 720p Low, while Shadow of the Tomb Raider runs at about 18 FPS. Gaming is already uncomfortable at 18-22.5 FPS.

Counter-Strike 2 runs at approximately 26 FPS at 1080p Low. For competitive play, the resolution will have to be reduced even further.

How Important Is System Memory?

Vega 6 uses system DDR4 instead of dedicated video memory, so RAM bandwidth directly affects FPS.

The Ryzen 3 2300U and Ryzen 3 3300U support dual-channel DDR4-2400. A laptop with two memory modules usually delivers more FPS than the same system with a single module.

When buying or upgrading a laptop with Vega 6, it is worth checking not only the memory capacity but also whether it operates in dual-channel mode.

Conclusion

The main limitation of Vega 6 today is demanding games: its 6 compute units are already too slow for them.

The versions in the Ryzen 3 3300U and Ryzen 3 PRO 3300U are slightly faster than the Vega 6 in the Ryzen 3 2300U thanks to clock speeds of up to 1200 MHz, but the memory configuration can noticeably reduce or increase this difference.

Demanding games from recent years require newer integrated graphics or a discrete graphics card.

Memory Bus
?
The memory bus width refers to the number of bits of data that the video memory can transfer within a single clock cycle. The larger the bus width, the greater the amount of data that can be transmitted instantaneously, making it one of the crucial parameters of video memory. The memory bandwidth is calculated as: Memory Bandwidth = Memory Frequency x Memory Bus Width / 8. Therefore, when the memory frequencies are similar, the memory bus width will determine the size of the memory bandwidth.
128-bit
Bandwidth
?
Memory bandwidth refers to the data transfer rate between the graphics chip and the video memory. It is measured in bytes per second, and the formula to calculate it is: memory bandwidth = working frequency × memory bus width / 8 bits.

ROPs
?
The Raster Operations Pipeline (ROPs) is primarily responsible for handling lighting and reflection calculations in games, as well as managing effects like anti-aliasing (AA), high resolution, smoke, and fire. The more demanding the anti-aliasing and lighting effects in a game, the higher the performance requirements for the ROPs; otherwise, it may result in a sharp drop in frame rate.
