MediaTek Helio G99: Why the Old 4G Chip Hasn't Been Written Off Yet

The MediaTek Helio G99 is one of MediaTek's most successful 4G chips for budget smartphones. It doesn't support 5G, is underpowered for heavy gaming, and no longer offers a significant performance buffer. However, it provides sufficient speed in affordable devices with moderate power consumption.

The essence of the Helio G99 lies in its combination of a 6nm manufacturing process, two powerful Cortex-A76 cores, and the low cost of devices. This chip has been used in smartphones and tablets for a long time where autonomy, stability, and price are more important than maximum performance.

Why the Helio G99 Became So Popular

The Helio G99 became popular not due to a new architecture. Its CPU configuration is familiar: two powerful Cortex-A76 cores and six energy-efficient Cortex-A55 cores. The setup is old, but it is still good enough for a budget smartphone.

The main difference between the G99 and the older Helio G95/G96 is the transition to a 6nm process. The chip runs cooler, consumes battery more efficiently, and maintains frequencies more stably under prolonged load. For a budget smartphone, this is more crucial than a small increase in frequencies or extra points in benchmarks.

The longevity of this formula is evident in the Helio G100. MediaTek didn't completely overhaul the platform but released a similar 6nm 4G chip with a comparable CPU/GPU base and extended camera support of up to 200 MP. This is not a performance leap but a continuation of the successful Helio G99 base for new budget devices.

What's Inside the Helio G99

The MediaTek Helio G99 uses an 8-core CPU:

  • Mali-G57 MC2 GPU;
  • 6nm manufacturing process;

Against the backdrop of modern mid-range Dimensity and Snapdragon chips, this configuration is already outdated. However, for a budget 4G smartphone, this foundation is still adequate, especially if the manufacturer didn't cut corners on memory and storage.

Everyday Performance

In everyday tasks, the Helio G99 performs well without any obvious lack of power. A smartphone with this chip handles browsing, messaging, YouTube, navigation, social media, and basic photo processing.

The two Cortex-A76 cores provide acceptable interface responsiveness, while the six Cortex-A55 cores manage background tasks with moderate power consumption. Therefore, the G99 is noticeably better than the cheapest platforms, where a weak CPU hinders the interface and app launches.

However, the performance headroom is limited. With a heavy UI, many apps running in the background, and active switching between them, the limitations become noticeable. The overall speed depends not only on the chip but also on the specific smartphone: a model with fast memory and UFS storage will be more responsive than a version with 4 GB of RAM and slow storage.

Gaming and Graphics

The Helio G99 was often marketed as a gaming chip, but only for the budget segment. Popular online games like PUBG Mobile, Mobile Legends, Standoff 2, and similar projects remain playable, but usually at medium or low settings.

In heavier games, the G99 quickly reaches the limits of its GPU: settings will need to be lowered. The main limitation is not the CPU cores but the Mali-G57 MC2 graphics. In Genshin Impact, Wuthering Waves, and other demanding games, the G99 requires low settings and fails to maintain a consistently high FPS.

Stability in games also depends on the cooling of the specific smartphone. Therefore, the Helio G99 is suitable for light gaming but not for high-settings gameplay.

Cameras, Display, and Multimedia

The Helio G99 supports cameras up to 108 MP and Full HD+ displays with refresh rates up to 120 Hz. For the budget class, this is sufficient: it's possible to create smartphones with a fast FHD+ display and high-resolution camera.

The support for 108 MP should not be confused with camera quality. The end result depends on the sensor, optics, stabilization, processing algorithms, and the quality of the smartphone itself. The Helio G99 provides a sufficient technical base but doesn't turn a budget smartphone into a camera phone.

The same applies to the display. The chip supports a fast Full HD+ screen, but brightness, color accuracy, and matrix quality are determined by the smartphone itself, not the SoC.

The Main Disadvantage - Lack of 5G

The main limitation of the Helio G99 in 2026 is the absence of 5G. For messaging, video, browsing, navigation, and calls, 4G is still sufficient. Therefore, the lack of 5G is not always critical.

The limitation becomes apparent when purchasing for 3-4 years: the absence of 5G reduces future-proofing. Especially when models with Dimensity 6100+, Dimensity 6300, or Snapdragon 695 are available nearby. They offer 5G and a more modern hardware base, even if the difference in everyday tasks is not always noticeable.

The Helio G99 is justified only at a significantly lower price. If a smartphone with the G99 is cheaper than its competitors with 5G, it is a reasonable purchase. If the price is similar, it’s better to look for a newer platform.

What to Consider When Buying a Smartphone with Helio G99

When choosing a smartphone with the Helio G99, it's important to consider more than just the processor itself. Devices based on the same chip can differ significantly in responsiveness.

It's better to choose a model with 6-8 GB of RAM, UFS storage, decent cooling, and a battery of at least 5000 mAh. In such a configuration, the Helio G99 operates more stably: the interface is smoother, apps open faster, and battery consumption is moderate.

Models with 4 GB of RAM, slow storage, and heavy UIs are less ideal. In such smartphones, limitations will become apparent earlier, even if the chip itself is still adequate for basic tasks.

The main criterion is the price. The Helio G99 should only be considered in a budget device; alongside models with Dimensity 6100+, Dimensity 6300, or Snapdragon 695, it becomes less appealing.

Comparison with Alternatives

Compared to the Helio G96, the Helio G99 is more interesting primarily due to the 6nm manufacturing process. Architecturally, this is not a big leap, but in practice, the G99 performs better in terms of heat and battery life.

Against the Snapdragon 680 and Snapdragon 685, the Helio G99 often has superior CPU performance and is better suited for browsing, social media, and frequent app switching. However, all these platforms remain 4G solutions without significant future-proofing.

The Snapdragon 695, Dimensity 6100+, and Dimensity 6300 are more worthwhile purchases for a few years. They offer 5G and in some cases stronger graphics. The Helio G99 can only compete with them on price.

The Helio G100 is more of an update to the same idea rather than a full replacement. Its main distinction is the expanded camera support while maintaining the same 4G base, rather than a sharp increase in performance.

Should You Buy a Smartphone with Helio G99?

The Helio G99 is most relevant in budget smartphones for everyday tasks: browsing, YouTube, social media, mapping, calls, music, and light gaming. It's best if the smartphone has 6-8 GB of RAM, UFS storage, a large battery, and a 90/120 Hz display.

It's better to choose a different chip if you need future-proofing, 5G, heavy gaming, fast video processing, or an advanced camera. At a price level comparable to models with 5G, the advantages of the Helio G99 almost disappear.

In such a case, it's better to opt for the Dimensity 6100+, Dimensity 6300, Snapdragon 695, or another newer chip. Even at similar everyday speeds, they provide greater future-proofing in terms of connectivity and graphics.
