MediaTek Helio G200 vs Helio G100: Same CPU, Slightly Faster Graphics

MediaTek Helio G200 is an upgraded version of Helio G100, not a new generation of the platform. The CPU configuration remains unchanged: two Cortex-A76 cores at up to 2.2 GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores at up to 2.0 GHz. The 6nm process, support for LPDDR4X and UFS 2.2, as well as the 4G modem, are the same.

The main difference with the G200 is the increased GPU frequency of the Mali-G57 MC2, now up to 1.1 GHz. Additionally, the new chip supports 12-bit DCG for HDR video and DCSAR for more stable connectivity in weak signal conditions.

Aside from the differences mentioned above, the platforms are the same: an octa-core CPU, a 6nm TSMC process, LPDDR4X-4266, UFS 2.2, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.2, and LTE Cat.13. Both chips are limited to 4G networks.

The TECNO Spark 40 Pro with Helio G100 slightly outperforms the Spark 40 Pro+ with G200, but the difference is fractional and falls within the typical variation between individual benchmarks.

In browsers, messengers, and regular applications, there will be no noticeable difference between the chips. The performance of a specific smartphone is more influenced by power limits, cooling, and firmware than the switch from G100 to G200.

AnTuTu considers CPU and GPU performance, memory and storage performance, and system responsiveness. Therefore, the results depend not only on the installed chip.

In the results provided, smartphones with the G200 outperform those with the G100 by about 10-13%. However, this gap cannot be considered a pure difference between the chips, as different devices with varying memory, cooling, and firmware are being compared.

The primary contribution to the G200's advantage comes from the increased GPU frequency. In Geekbench, where CPU performance is more pronounced, there is no significant gap.

Graphics and Gaming

The Mali-G57 MC2 in Helio G200 operates at frequencies up to 1.1 GHz compared to 1.0 GHz for G100. According to TECNO, graphical performance has increased by about 10%, while the CPU remains unchanged.

In practice, the gain usually translates to a few more frames per second or a more stable frame rate under prolonged load. Expecting a notable jump to much higher graphics settings is unrealistic.

Both chips use dual-core graphics Mali-G57 and remain in the same performance class. In demanding games, the main limitation remains the GPU. The increased frequency does not elevate Helio G200 into a higher segment.

High screen resolution further increases the load on graphics and can minimize G200's small advantage. Therefore, a smartphone with Helio G100 and a Full HD display may sometimes show comparable gaming results to a model with G200 and a higher resolution.

Cameras and Connectivity

Both processors support cameras with resolutions up to 200 MP. Helio G200 also has 12-bit DCG for HDR video. This technology helps retain more detail simultaneously in bright and dark areas of the frame.

Ultimately, the video quality still depends on the sensor and image processing in the specific smartphone. The mere presence of DCG does not automatically make the camera better.

DCSAR is designed for more stable mobile network operation in low signal areas. MediaTek claims a reduction in latency by up to 30% and an increase in effective connection distance by up to 83%. This information comes from the manufacturer and is not a guaranteed outcome on every network.

The modem class remains unchanged: LTE Cat.13 without 5G support.

What to Choose

If the prices are the same, it’s best to choose a smartphone with Helio G200. It offers slightly faster graphics, 12-bit DCG, and DCSAR while maintaining the same CPU performance.

However, there is no need to overpay just for the new index. If a model with G100 is cheaper or better in terms of display, cameras, and memory, it may be a more worthwhile purchase.

It is also not advisable to switch from an already purchased smartphone with Helio G100 to G200: there is almost no difference in applications, and the graphical improvement is too small for a full upgrade.
